You’ve probably heard the stats. Things like, “more data is created every day than existed in the entire world back in 2003” (true). Or how about, “72 hours of video are uploaded to YouTube every minute”[1] (true). Impressive as they are, these kinds of stats share another important characteristic:  they are totally useless.

As much as I’m tempted to just say “42”, this is a more interesting question than it seems on the surface. Many Guidewire customers have an enterprise guideline for environments that every development project must adhere to, and our products fit nicely into such a structure. Others are looking for guidance and a best practice recommendation from a vendor like Guidewire.

As the month of October started to come to a close I had the bright idea to dress up for Halloween as “Flo”, Progressive’s latest marketing marvel.

In this installment of "Keys to Success" I probe a somewhat controversial topic and that is the implementation of an Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) in parallel with a Guidewire core system.

So, here we go...

This article is the first of a multi-part series exploring Guidewire's product flexibility and our implementation methodology. Part one focuses on why an agile scrum methodology works so well with flexible packaged solutions like ours. In part two, I will discuss the importance of setting implementation Product Alignment goals  and  will continue by introducing our evolved implementation strategy called Value Alignment.

I recently purchased a book from my local bookstore titled F in Exams - The Very Best Totally Wrong Test Answers. It’s a compilation of funny test responses collected by a teacher. I thoroughly enjoyed reading some of the comical entries, including:

Exam Question: What does a transformer do?

Student’s Response: It can go from being a robot to a sports car in three seconds.

Even if you are a technology junkie like me, it’s difficult to keep up with all of the languages written for the Java Virtual Machine. If a few weeks pass and you haven’t heard of a new one, you probably aren’t paying attention (I just came across Loop the other day).

This is the first in a series of blog posts about our experiences adopting agile methodology in the context of sales and marketing. This series will talk about process, tools, and how the team has benefited.

Since joining Guidewire about a year ago, I have had the privilege of hearing from many of our customers about how agile methodology has transformed how they run IT projects. A typical customer experience goes like this:

Like millions of other people around the world, I’ve been glued to my television for the past couple of weeks, taken in by the spectacle that is the Olympic Games. To me, the Olympics represent competition and sportsmanship at the highest possible level, and it’s been a lot of fun to watch. However, in between all of the heartbreak and glory, I can’t help but wonder – what do the Olympics have in common with the property/casualty insurance industry?

We had the good fortune of starting Guidewire at a transformative time in the world of software engineering. It was in the early 2000's that people started really rethinking what it meant to write testable software. Some of the progress came through the advent of new tools and language constructs and from the sheer availability of computing power to do meaningful large-scale automated testing. But the real difference, for us, was in switching our heads around to put testing first.

I've noticed a marked contrast among underwriters - between those less seasoned, who show a growing eagerness in underwriting automation techniques, and the more experienced underwriters, who express their reservations. The latter group points to the perceived pitfalls of relying too much on technology and the inability of those newer to the role to match the value of instinct that is gradually acquired over time.

This is the first installment of what I hope is a series of posts that outlines keys to successful Guidewire system implementations using the agile methodology. This installment focuses on a role in our agile implementations, the product owner.

Last week, I had the good fortune of attending the ACE (America’s Claims Event) conference in Las Vegas. It was an energizing week for me, and I was particularly inspired to see so many of Guidewire’s customers in speaking roles at the conference. As you might expect with a claims conference, there were many complex issues discussed throughout the week. However, one theme that I heard consistently reinforced was quite simple.

Summer holiday weekends ahead have my thoughts drifting to happy times with friends and family that will undoubtedly include raising a glass, or two, or more. Away from work and enjoying great company it’s easy to lose count, but the fun times can fade upon waking the next morning with a splitting headache.

At Guidewire, we think of each of our carrier customers as family members: true partners in what will be a career-long journey together. Holding this metaphor in our heads makes it easier to put engineering efforts into the right context and to prioritize them, but it also means that we take on a variety of burdens and responsibilities that transcend the traditional vendor-purchaser "relationship". I'm going to write about some of those challenges in my next few blog entries.
