SEAMLESS UPDATES WITH ZERO COST, DOWNTIME, OR FRICTION
General Motors launched OnStar Insurance in 1996 to complement its automotive ecosystem. In 2024, it rebranded as General Motors Insurance, reaffirming its commitment to innovation. By integrating in-vehicle technology with Guidewire InsuranceSuite on Guidewire Cloud, General Motors Insurance has redefined personal auto insurance. The result is a faster, more flexible, and customer-centric experience.
“We envisioned an insurance company that doesn’t just react to accidents but proactively improves safety and simplifies the customer experience,” said Andrew Rose, President of General Motors Insurance. “To achieve that, we needed Guidewire’s modern, cloud-native solution, which could match our ambitious timeline and deliver the flexibility we needed to innovate.”
With Guidewire’s out-of-the-box (OOTB) functionality, General Motors Insurance executed one of the industry’s fastest core system implementations, launching in under nine months. Just four months later, the company expanded into two additional states.
“Within just four months after launching, we expanded into two more states and have already completed two seamless updates with zero cost, zero downtime, and zero pain,” said Rose. “We are NOT getting behind on our systems.”
The flexibility of Guidewire Cloud ensures General Motors Insurance remains agile in a fast-changing industry. The insurer can rapidly roll out new products, integrate updates without disruption, and stay ahead of evolving customer expectations.
General Motors Insurance’s API-driven, multi-channel architecture supports a modern underwriting and claims experience powered by connected vehicle data.
Josh Thompson, SVP of Claims and Operations, explained, “It’s all about meeting customers where they are and providing a better, more proactive claims experience.”
Key innovations include real-time crash detection, enabling instant claims initiation and faster repairs. With customer consent, General Motors Insurance analyzes driving behavior to reward safe drivers with competitive rates and actionable insights. Customers can also manage policies and receive real-time safety alerts via General Motor’s app.
“Guidewire’s cloud-native platform was instrumental in achieving our ambitious goals,” said Lenin Sadineni, SVP and Head of Technology. “Its OOTB functionality allowed us to focus on delivering customer-centric solutions while minimizing complexity.”
Looking ahead, General Motors Insurance plans to expand into more states and explore telematics-based commercial auto insurance. Its vision aligns with General Motors’s broader mission of zero crashes, zero emissions, and zero congestion.
